Marukai Corporation USA was established in 1965 by the Marukai Corporation in Osaka, Japan (Headquarters: 1-18-5 Nishi-ku Kyomachibori, Osaka, Japan). Branches specializing in the importing of Japanese products, such as groceries, goods, furniture, health products and electronic appliances were open in Southern California and Hawaii.

In 1982 the Marukai Corporation expanded its focus to include membership based shopping by establishing the Marukai Wholesale Mart in Gardena, California –the first Japanese reselling store of its kind. Following the success in Gardena, two more branches opened in 1987 and 1996 in the Honolulu area. The first Marukai 99¢ Shop opened in Honolulu in 1998, and in 2002, Marukai 99¢ Super Store opened in Waipahu. In 2003 May and July, Marukai 99¢ Shop opened doors to customers in Kaneohe Windwad Mall and SACK-N-SAVE supermarket in Stadium Market Place. Now expanded merchandise lines from only 99cent items to more higher price lines to offer more varietieis and valued items.

Marukai Wholesale Mart was able to provide serious price cuts on Japanese products by establishing and implementing cost effective importing routes. With the mission statement of “providing quality products at reasonable costs,”the Marukai Wholesale Mart continues to resell over 20,000 specialty products at discounted prices to its 80,000 and growing members.
